The metallographic specimen preparation of powder metallurgical samples is affected by the specimens composition, packing and sintering conditions. Typical analysis includes examining the microstructure at multiple points to see differences from outside to center or top to bottom. Microstructural features of interest include: porosity, grain size, inclusions and orientation of voids.
Preparation Challenge:Eliminating or remove smearing that occurs during grinding so as to properly open the pores for analysis.
